Revitalization efforts are creating the conditions for communities and economies to rebuild and thrive

November 10, 2022 · Howie Centre, Nova Scotia · Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency (ACOA)

A community centre in Cape Breton has set a powerful example of how Canadian cities and towns persevere and flourish when they have public spaces to promote social interaction, physical activity, safety and wellbeing. Our economic recovery is closely linked to the vitality of our communities and their shared spaces.

Today, Mike Kelloway, Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister of Fisheries, Oceans and the Canadian Coast Guard and Member of Parliament for Cape Breton-Canso, announced an investment of $75,000 through the Canada Community Revitalization Fund (CCRF) for the Howie Center Community and Seniors Centre, known locally as the Spanish River Community Centre. The announcement was made on behalf of the Honourable Ginette Petitpas Taylor, Minister of Official Languages and Minister responsible for ACOA.

Upgrades to the Centre were completed in May 2022 and included a generator, a modern, accessible kitchen, energy efficient LED lighting, new appliances, and updated wiring.

As a result, the facility was well-equipped and ready to serve as a storm centre when Hurricane Fiona struck, providing warmth, shelter, Wi-Fi and over 300 hot meals to nearby residents who lost power in the storm. The Centre also provided sleeping accommodations for the veteran-led Team Rubicon Disaster Response group during their relief efforts.

The upgrades ensure that the Centre can continue to play a vital role in serving the community throughout the year.

The CCRF was launched in June 2021. The fund provides $500 million over two years to Canada's regional development agencies (RDAs) to invest in shared and inclusive public spaces. The Government of Canada is committed to investing in shared spaces to make them safer, greener and more accessible. This will help stimulate local economies, create jobs, and improve the quality of life for Canadians.
