Recovery underway in Timber Creek

NT Government

The situation in Timber Creek has now transitioned to the recovery phase as the Territory Government continues to support the community from the effects of a one in 50 year flood event.

A number of Senior Government Officials, welfare support crew including the Red Cross, and contractors have been on the ground in Timber Creek and surrounding homelands, and have deemed the majority of homes for residents and all community infrastructure to return to as safe.

A majority of homes can now be reoccppied, and those that need works have been identified and processes are in place to rectify them.

A number of residents from homelands surrounding Timber Creek will start returning home from today with sewerage, water and power now available, while others will remain for the time being staying at the Defence Bradshaw accommodation while their homes undergo repairs.

The affected communities have also had adequate supplies of food and fuel with more scheduled.

As of 12pm today the Emergency Declaration will be lifted as we move to our recovery phase.

Continued heavy rainfall and isolated storms are expected throughout the Territory for the coming days, including for tonight's New Year's Eve celebrations, which increases chances of flooding. It's important for all Territorians to be prepared and stay informed by following the Bureau of Meteorology, SecureNT, Roads Report, and the NT Police, Fire and Emergency Services Facebook pages for the latest information and updates, and stay safe as we enter the New Year.

"I am heartened by the community resilience and actions of many local residents who acted swiftly, together with our first responders, to ensure everyone could be safely accommodated while emergency repairs were undertaken.
