Renewed appeal over glassing at Haymarket restaurant; further CCTV released

Police are renewing an appeal for information as investigations continue into an alleged assault in Haymarket earlier this year, resulting in a serious laceration to the head.

About 9.15pm on Thursday 27 February 2020, a 23-year-old man was sitting with a friend in a restaurant in Thomas Street, when he was approached from behind by another man.

Police have been told the man struck him in the back of the head with a glass bottle, before he snatched the 23-year-old man's spectacles and threw them back into his face.

The injured man was treated at St Vincent's Hospital, where he received 14 stitches to close the head wound.

Officers from Sydney City Police Area Command established a crime scene and commenced an investigation.

As part of their inquiries, officers have released CCTV of two men who may be able to assist with the investigation.

The first man has been described as being of Asian appearance, about 175cm-180cm tall, of medium build, aged in his 30s, with black short hair. The man is depicted in the vision wearing a black shirt and black pants.

The second man has been described as being of Mediterranean appearance, about 180cm-185cm tall, of medium build, aged in his 30s, with black short hair. The man is depicted in the vision wearing a black shirt and blue ripped denim jeans.

Sydney City Police Area Command Crime Manager, Detective Inspector David El-Badawi, urged members of the community to come forward if they recognise the men in the vision.

"Our detectives have been working meticulously on this investigation and are very keen to speak to anyone who has information that may assist with inquiries," Det Insp El-Badawi said.

"From all accounts, this was an unprovoked and cowardly assault and this type of behaviour is simply unacceptable and will not be tolerated.

"We need the community's assistance to help us put the final pieces together and put those responsible before the courts," Det Insp El-Badawi said.

Anyone with information about this incident is urged to contact Crime Stoppers: 1800 333 000 or https://nsw.crimestoppers.com.au. Information is treated in strict confidence. The public is reminded not to report information via NSW Police social media pages.
