Restoring Financial Discipline By Capping Executive Pay

Liberal Party Victoria

As part of the Liberals and Nationals' plan to restore financial discipline and prioritise essential services, a future Jess Wilson-led government will introduce a new public sector executive pay cap.

Under the Allan Labor Government, the number of Victorian Public Service executives has almost tripled, with a Big Build executive recently approved for a salary of $834,000 - more than $260,000 above the maximum salary band.

Jeroen Weimar - the person responsible for implementing COVID lockdowns on Victoria and CEO of the failed Commonwealth Games - is currently earning up to $837,100 as Secretary of the Department of Transport.

Meanwhile, recent Victoria Police data has confirmed there are now 500 fewer police on the beat than when Jacinta Allan became Premier and many graduate nurses are unable to secure jobs in the healthcare sector.

To ensure these essentials are prioritised and executive remuneration meets community expectations, a future Liberal and Nationals Government will cap base salaries for new senior public sector contracts at the same level as the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court - currently $598,248.

The cap will apply to new hires and any renewed or renegotiated contracts and will increase each year in line with wages across the state, saving more than $20 million by 2036.

Under the Allan Labor Government, Victoria's net debt is growing by $1.7 million an hour and is expected to reach a record $192.6 billion by 2028-29.

Leader of the Opposition and Shadow Treasurer, Jess Wilson, said: "My team's plan is about ensuring executive pay meets community expectations and that our priority remains on the essentials.

"Whilst Labor is gifting quarter-of-a-million-dollar pay rises to Big Build executives, my Liberal and Nationals team is focused on hiring 3,000 more police to keep the community safe.

"Under Labor, the number of public service executives has tripled but crime is up, our roads are in disrepair and it takes longer to get an ambulance. It's time for a fresh start that prioritises the basics.

"Only a Liberal and Nationals Government I lead will restore financial discipline and put the focus back where it belongs."
