Review on plasma stability and confinement affected by interaction between energetic particles and tearing modes

Science China Press

This topic is reviewed by Prof. Huishan Cai (University of Science and Technology of China) and Prof. Ding Li (Institute of Physics, the Chinese Academy of Sciences) mainly based on their last ten years studies. Fusion energy will benefit mankind, and is also an important strategic demand for China. To develop fusion energy, it must study burning plasma physics. However, how to maintain long term and steady state burning plasma is still a global difficulty. This relates to confinement and transport, heating and driven, magnetohydrodynamics instabilities (tearing mode is one of the most dangerous instabilities) and energetic particles physics. Energetic particles and tearing mode would significantly affect performance of burning plasma. The interaction between energetic particles and tearing mode is a key issue. In this review, the physical phenomena are described based on the analytical theory, and the experiments and simulations are also referred to illustrate and confirm the results. The interaction of energetic particles and tearing modes is considered from two perspectives: (i) the influence of energetic particles on tearing modes and (ii) the transport of energetic particles by tearing modes. The related references are included. This review paper is benefit for the people who are studying this topic or become interested in this topic.
