Police are urging drivers to plan their visit to the Sydney CBD and Eastern Suburbs this weekend as extensive road closures and special event clearways will be in place for the 2026 TCS Sydney Marathon.
This weekend Sydney will be hosting the iconic Sydney Marathon which will see over 40,000 people take to the streets across the Sydney CBD and Eastern Suburbs to compete in both the TCS Sydney Marathon and Elite Wheelchair Marathon.
Police are also expecting thousands of spectators will come to the city to cheer on their friends and family members who are competing in this year's event.
On Sunday (30 August 2026), the TCS Sydney Marathon will commence at 6.30am and 6.15am for the wheelchair race with both races starting at North Sydney Oval and ending at the Sydney Opera House.
A high-visibility police operation will be in place for the duration of the event and will include general duties officers from across the Central Metropolitan Region, assisted by specialist police from the Mounted Unit, Police Transport Command, Dog Unit, Bicycle Unit, PolAir, and the Traffic and Highway Patrol Command.
While the event is underway major roads in North Sydney, Sydney CBD, Pyrmont, Darlinghurst, Moore Park and Kingsford, including the Sydney Harbour Bridge, Western Distributor, Oxford Street and Anzac Parade, will be closed between 2am and 4.30pm on Sunday.
The Sydney Harbour Bridge, Cahill Expressway and Western Distributor will be closed from 3am to 11am and Macquarie and Oxford Streets will be closed between 4am and 4.30pm.
Widespread special event clearway parking restrictions will also be in effect on roads along and surrounding the course from 12.01am Sunday. Drivers need to check signs carefully on the day and the night before to avoid being towed.

Participants and volunteers should also take advantage of the extra public transport services available when travelling to and from the event.
The closest train station to the start line is North Sydney Station and the closest Metro stations are Victoria Cross and Crows Nest.
Bus services will be affected by road closures, particularly in the Sydney CBD, North Sydney and Moore Park; however, they will continue operating on alternate routes and additional services will be available.
