Rockpool to re-open tomorrow

Get ready Townsville - The Rockpool on The Strand is set to re-open tomorrow (20 June).

Townsville City Council sport and recreation committee chairperson Maurie Soars said the iconic pool was closed in late-March to help slow the spread of the coronavirus.

While other pools were reopened as part of stage two easing of COVID restrictions, the Rockpool had remained shut after urgent maintenance requirements were identified.

Despite some further maintenance needing to be undertaken Cr Soars said the community's message and love for the venue had been loud and clear.

"The re-opening of The Rockpool is great news for the community," Cr Soars said.

"I've spoken to a lot of people across the community and I understand people are eager to get back down to The Rockpool for their morning swim or to simply relax.

"So in response to that feedback, we will delay some of the further non urgent maintenance to mid-July so that we can re-open the pool tomorrow and keep it open through the upcoming school holidays.

"Council would have liked to have been able to re-open The Rockpool at the same time as it re-opened its pools, however we needed to do our jobs and ensure it was fit for use.

Cr Soars urged those using The Rockpool to continue to abide by COVID-19 safety precautions including maintaining social distancing and to stay away if you're feeling sick.
