Community members are invited to roll up their sleeves to help grow Perth's urban forest at the City of Perth's National Tree Day community planting event on Sunday 26 July.
From 10am to 11.30am, the Lord Mayor, Councillors, City staff and volunteers will plant more than 3,400 native plants on the northern side of Heirisson Island, strengthening the local ecosystem and creating habitat for native wildlife.
The community planting is part of the City's long-term commitment to creating a cooler, greener and more liveable Perth.
The City is working towards increasing tree canopy cover to 30 per cent by 2036, as outlined in the Urban Forest Plan (2016–2036), while continuing to invest in greener streets, parks and public spaces.
City of Perth Lord Mayor Bruce Reynolds said National Tree Day was an opportunity for the community to make a lasting contribution to Perth's future.
"National Tree Day is a fantastic opportunity for people of all ages to come together and leave a lasting legacy for Perth," he said.
"Creating a greener city isn't just about planting trees it's about investing in a healthier, cooler and more liveable future. Every tree and native plant we add supports biodiversity, provides habitat for wildlife, increases shade and helps reduce the urban heat island effect.
"Creating one of Australia's greenest capital cities is one of the City of Perth's highest priorities. Over the past 18 months, we've continued to invest in expanding our urban forest through street tree planting, park enhancements and community greening initiatives, with thousands of new trees and native plants helping transform our city.
"We've set an ambitious goal of achieving 30 per cent tree canopy by 2036, and we'll only achieve that by working together with our community. National Tree Day is a wonderful example of what we can accomplish when everyone gets involved."
Suitable for all ages and equipment is provided.
