Runway Extension to Boost East Kimberley Connectivity

Construction of the East Kimberley Regional Airport runway extension in Kununurra is complete, paving the way for stronger connectivity and economic growth across the region.

The extended runway will enable larger aircraft to operate at full capacity, significantly increasing passenger numbers and freight capability, while strengthening aviation access to the region.

All levels of government partnered to deliver the $19.1 million runway extension, with the Albanese Government contributing $15.1 million, the Cook Government $2.5 million and the Shire of Wyndham-East Kimberley $1.5 million.

In consultation with the Mirima Council Aboriginal Corporation, the project was given the Miriwoong name of Goonoonoorram dawang malb-malbgajinga-woorr, which translates as "place for aircrafts (things good at flying) in Kununurra and all surrounding areas".

The upgrades will remove passenger restrictions on larger capacity aircraft operating between Perth and Kununurra, allowing all seats to be filled.

The longer runway will help boost tourism and support new routes to the East Kimberley, while the ability to transport more freight will support the local mining and agricultural industries.

Future-proofing the airport will also support continuation of the Cook Government's subsidised flights between Kununurra, Halls Creek and Balgo and flights for Kununurra residents to Perth through the landmark Regional Airfare Zone Cap scheme.

The runway extension will be fully operational subject to final regulatory approvals.
