Council has endorsed a recommendation to retain South Yarra Siding Reserve as an on-leash dog area, to ensure the space is available to as many people as possible.
A safety audit specifically concluded that the on-leash designation should be retained to minimise collisions between dogs, pedestrians and cyclists within the park. The size of the park and concerns around the installation of fencing also contributed to the decision.
Officially opened in May 2024, South Yarra Siding Reserve is an accessible park with pedestrian and cyclist connections, indigenous public art installations, seating, lighting, large areas of lawn and extensive landscaping.
The Reserve is located south of Toorak Road, wedged between the Sandringham and Frankston/Dandenong train lines, bordered by Osborne and William Streets in South Yarra. Council negotiated the upgrade of this under-utilised space as part of the Metro Tunnel construction.
Mayor Cr Melina Sehr said the safety audit, combined with earlier community feedback, made it clear that keeping dogs on-leash at South Yarra Siding Reserve is the right approach.
"While we know some residents had hoped for an off-leash space, this decision ensures South Yarra Siding Reserve remains safe and inclusive for the broader community. Importantly, there are still great nearby off-leash options in South Yarra for dog owners and their furry friends to enjoy," said Cr Sehr.
Caroline Gardens, Caroline Street South Yarra
Nestled amongst Caroline Street apartments, Caroline Gardens is a lush dog-friendly park and playground with accessible equipment (basket swings with rubber matting) with BBQ facilities and picnic seating.
Surrey Park, Surrey Road, South Yarra
Surrey Park is a small oval shaped grass area, 60m square in size, with native landscaping, walking paths and recycled timber seating around the perimeter.
Thomas Oval Dog Park
Stonnington's first dedicated dog park, Thomas Oval is situated south of Como Park North and can be accessed via the boardwalk next to Alexandra Avenue. The dog park is fully fenced, with separate fenced sections for large and smaller dogs. It has a lawn area and features to keep curious pets interested and happy. Seating is located throughout the park for owners to sit and relax while keeping an eye on their pet.
