The Australian Government has commenced an open and merit-based selection process to support the appointment of new Administrators for the Indian Ocean Territories (IOT) and Norfolk Island.

The role of Administrator is an important public office supporting the external territories - carrying out key statutory, civic and ceremonial responsibilities for the local communities as well as being an advocate to Government for their interests.

"We are looking for people who are passionate about engaging with and working for these local communities, with a commitment to deliver tangible outcomes for our external territories," Minister for Regional Development, Local Government and Territories Kristy McBain.

"The role of Administrator is a significant one for the local communities and the Government. It is vital that there is a rigorous and transparent recruitment process to ensure that we find the right people to fill these important roles."

The Administrator is the most senior Australian Government representative in Norfolk Island and the IOT's Christmas Island and the Cocos (Keeling) Islands.

Administrators are appointed by the Governor-General of Australia, on advice from the Australian Government.

Advertising for the positions has now commenced through national media and online recruitment platforms, with applications open until 16 October 2022.

Minister McBain said the Government was supporting a transparent process to select candidates who would be a voice for the local communities and facilitate the Government's agenda in the external territories.

Current Administrator of Christmas Island (CI) and the Cocos (Keeling) Islands (CKI), Mrs Natasha Griggs, ends her term on 4 October 2022, with acting Administrator arrangements in place until the appointment process is finalised. Mr Eric Hutchinson's term as Administrator of Norfolk Island ends on 31 March 2023.
