Secretary General Emphasizes Council of Europe's Role at Dubrovnik Forum 2023

CoE/Secretary General

"To prevent the "next Russia" we need to recognise the damage that is done by the rise of extreme populism, nationalism and "anti-rights" movements", highlighted Secretary General Marija Pejčinović Burić at the Dubrovnik Forum 2023 "Navigating the Global Reshuffle".

While addressing the challenges to reverse democratic backsliding, the Secretary General underlined the multilateral Council of Europe system that has been the bedrock of peace and democratic security on the continent.

"We witness intimidation, assault and even murder of journalists, use and misuse of laws to shrink civic space and participation, and the rise of hate speech online and offline", emphasised Marija Pejčinović Burić.

A meeting with the President of the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) Odile Renaud-Basso was also on the agenda.
