The Baroness was joined by SLC colleagues and representatives from the design and construction teams on Wednesday (10th April) to unveil a plaque to mark the occasion. She was also given a tour of the building which highlighted some of its key sustainability features, including the living wall, solar panels and cycle storage area.
SLC moved into the six story, 75,000 sq. ft purpose-built office in January and the building has been designed to encourage collaboration and provide a modern working environment for colleagues.
Welcoming the Baroness to Glasgow, Chris Larmer, CEO of SLC, said: "It's a great day to have the Baroness officially open our new Glasgow headquarters. SLC has been in the city since its inception more than 30 years ago and relocating to Clyde Place has been an exciting new chapter for our organisation.
"It's fantastic to have a new modern space for our colleagues and we have settled very quickly into the riverside community. At SLC, we are committed to enabling students to invest in their future through further and higher education, and we look forward to continuing to deliver our purpose in our new home."
The site has followed the UK Green Building Council's Net Zero Carbon Building - Performance Levels guidelines and will secure a BREEAM Excellent certification. BREEAM is the globally recognised standard for best practice in the design, construction, and operation of sustainable buildings. It's also received a WiredScore Platinum rating for its digital connectivity.
Baroness Barran, Minister for the Schools System and Student Finance, said: "It was a great honour to attend the Student Loan Company's new headquarters in Glasgow.
"I was delighted to see the new building, which offers a great space to work in. I was particularly struck by the commitment, collaboration and pride demonstrated by everyone I met."
As part of the plans, SLC worked with the Government Property Agency on its UK Government Hubs Programme, which is facilitating the co-locating up to 600 civil servants. As a result, the Criminal Injuries Compensation Authority, an executive agency which is sponsored by the Ministry of Justice, recently moved into the building.
