Social Justice Charter adopted at Georges River Council

Georges River Council

Georges River Council has unanimously adopted the Social Justice Charter 2022-2026 at the Council Meeting on Monday, 22 August 2022.

The Georges River area is home to many diverse communities that form the strong social character we see today and is experiencing a period of growth with a forecast of 13.85% increase in population between 2021 and 2036.

With this increase in diversity, there is a greater need to ensure community members feel that they belong and are accepted in the community, while also being able to access the support services they need.

The Social Justice Charter is built around four core principles to guide Council in championing social justice in the community, they are:

  • Participation – everyone has the opportunity to shape their community
  • Equity – everyone has fair and balanced access to opportunities, resources, information, facilities and services
  • Respect – everyone in the community is respected and valued
  • Empowerment – everyone is supported to thrive in the way they choose

Georges River Council Mayor, Nick Katris says, "Social Justice can only be achieved by removing systemic barriers and promoting equality in everything we do in our community.

"The Social Justice Charter will help Council drive social change and improve the lives of people in our community by building a culture of access, participation, respect, empowerment and equality."

"Thank you to the reference groups and cultural committees and community members of all ages who contributed their thoughts to help shape a better Georges River for our future."

The Social Justice Charter supports the multiple goals across all five pillars of Council's Community Strategic Plan 2022-2023.
