Specialist wicketkeeper program honours cricket great Rod Marsh

  • High-performance program pays tribute to Rod Marsh
  • Marsh grew up in Armadale and died aged 74, on 4 March this year 
  • Western Australia's next generation of top wicketkeepers will be invited to take part in a high-performance coaching program in honour of Australian cricketing great Rod Marsh.  

    The McGowan Government today announced $100,000 of funding for a specialist wicketkeeper program for young, talented cricketers aged between 15 and 19 years old.

    The program will offer expert coaching and support, and will complement WA Cricket's existing specialist pathway programs.

    The McGowan Government is also in talks with WA Cricket around matches between Western Australia and South Australia in the Sheffield Shield to be played in honour of Rod Marsh.

    As stated by Sport and Recreation Minister David Templeman:

    "Rod Marsh was one of our country's most iconic cricketers, setting a world record 355 test match dismissals in a golden era of cricket.

    "What better way to honour one of our State's sporting greats than with a high-performance coaching program that will support and nurture the talent of our rising wicketkeeping stars.

    "I have spoken to Ros Marsh and she is delighted that her husband's legacy will live on through WA's next generation of top wicketkeepers."

    As stated by WA Cricket Acting CEO Justin Michael:

    "We're honoured to launch this program to foster the next generation of talent and continue the legacy of one of the greatest wicketkeepers the world has seen.

    "Rod Marsh is an icon of cricket in WA who had a knack for identifying future stars of the game, so this program is a fitting tribute to his outstanding contribution to cricket."
