Dubbo Regional Council's latest Tourism Market Report from November 2022 continued to show consistent visitation numbers across the Dubbo Region as spring came to an end.
Whilst most operators noted an increase in numbers compared to November 2021, many commented on the impacts of flooding, road closures, road conditions and detours affecting overall visitation more recently. When compared to previous months, attractions noted a decline in bookings, including the uptake of the Great Big Adventure Pass.
Attraction facilities noted strong school group bookings and tours again for the month of November.
Mayor of Dubbo Regional Council, Councillor Mathew Dickerson was pleased with visitation to the region.
"In Dubbo, visitor numbers and accommodation occupancy rates have increased when compared with last year's November figures. Visitation to the Royal Flying Doctor Service Visitor Experience increased by 8%, Taronga Western Plains Zoo and Old Dubbo Gaol around the 25% mark, with the Western Plains Cultural Centre recording a remarkable 99% increase. Compared to the 4-year average, visitation was consistent with only small variations."
"In Wellington, the average occupancy rate increased by 22% compared to the previous year, however unfortunately the Wellington Caves recorded a 36% decrease which can be partly attributed to the impacts of flooding at the complex," Councillor Dickerson said.
The Gaden Cave is open on a day-by-day basis, while the Cathedral Cave and Fossil Mine remain closed to the public. Daily Discovery Lab sessions can also be booked and the Ancient Landscapes Gallery can be accessed for free.
Visitor Information Coordinator Jane Bendall said November had been another busy month.
"We have had another busy month in November. Whilst visitation at the Wellington Visitor Centre has been down, we've seen an 81% increase in visitation at the Dubbo VIC compared to November 2021. In addition to attending to visitors, or answering phone calls about road conditions, we have packaged and sold around 300 local produce hampers to local businesses and residents."
"We still have a large range of local produce in stock in both Dubbo and Wellington, so come and see us between 9am and 5pm until Saturday, 24 December to purchase some last-minute Christmas gifts, select a pre-made hamper or request a custom size with products of your choice," Ms Bendall said.
