Stolen painting recovered; man charged - Mascot

A man will appear in court today charged over the alleged theft of a painting from a Mascot business last weekend.

About 5.30pm on Friday 7 February 2020, a man attended a photography business on Gardeners Road, and allegedly stole a painting from the foyer before leaving the store.

The painting – with an estimated value between $10,000 and $12,000 – was due to be auctioned to raise money for bushfire charities.

Officers from South Sydney Police Area Command were notified and commenced an investigation.

Following extensive inquiries, a 24-year-old man was arrested at Marrickville about 10.30am yesterday (Thursday 13 February 2020), and taken to Newton Police Station.

The painting was recovered and his since been returned to the artist.

The Balmain man has been charged with larceny more than $5000 and was refused bail to appear at Newton Local Court today (Friday 14 February 2020).
