Strong Results In Subject Rankings Once Again

Several subjects at the University of Würzburg rank among the top performers nationally and internationally in the latest Times Higher Education Subject Rankings.

"This clear demonstration of our university's research strength confirms our claim to the title of University of Excellence," says President Paul Pauli.

Published annually, the "Times Higher Education World University Rankings by Subject" are regarded as one of the most important international references for assessing the disciplinary strengths of universities. The rankings provide a differentiated evaluation across eleven subject areas and are based on indicators relating to research, teaching, knowledge transfer and international outlook.

JMU excels once again in the Life Sciences

Ranked 116th, Julius-Maximilians-Universität Würzburg (JMU) is among the top ten percent of universities worldwide in the field of Life Sciences. In Germany, it places tenth overall and ranks third in Bavaria, behind the two major Munich universities.

JMU achieves particularly outstanding results in the "Research Quality" indicator, which assesses the generation and citation of new knowledge. With a score of 94.1, the university ranks first in Germany. This result confirms the strong research performance of Würzburg's researchers in the Life Sciences, which include disciplines such as biology, biochemistry and biotechnology.

Continued success across further disciplines: Medicine, Psychology, Computer Science and Physical Sciences

The Faculty of Medicine also performs exceptionally well and is ranked among the world's top 150 universities. Particularly noteworthy is the "Industry" indicator, which measures research income from industry and the number of patents filed: here, Medicine once again achieves the maximum score of 100. The fields of Psychology and Computer Science likewise record strong results in this indicator, with scores of 93.9 and 94.1 points respectively. In the overall assessment across all performance indicators, both disciplines rank among the top 15 percent worldwide. The field of Physics likewise conducts cutting-edge research at an international level. In the THE Subject Ranking 2026 the discipline is currently ranked 255.
