NT Fire and Rescue Service (NTFRS) members responded to a structure fire at an apartment on Harvey Street, Darwin City early this morning.

Around 12:10am, emergency services received a report of a fire at the building, with large amounts of smoke impacting the apartment level affected.

Residents safely evacuated prior to the arrival of crews due to working smoke alarms. Upon arrival, NTFRS members identified the fire in the bedroom of an apartment and extinguished the blaze.

The bedroom where the fire started sustained significant damage.

No injuries were reported as a result of the incident.

A fire investigator attended the scene to determine the cause.

Fire Watch Commander Craig Slack said, "This incident is a timely reminder for all residents to ensure their smoke alarms are installed, working and tested regularly.

"Early warning from a functioning smoke alarm provides critical time to evacuate safely.

"We also encourage everyone to have a clear and practiced fire escape plan, so they know what to do in an emergency. If a fire does occur, get out, stay out, and call Triple Zero (000)."
