Let's take a look at the national map to start, as we always do. The main feature is this low pressure system in inland Western Australia. That's going to be the focus for showers and thunderstorms on Thursday, extending right from the Top End down to the south coast of Western Australia.
Meanwhile, in the east, really settled weather on the way right across the south-east. Just a few coastal showers in Tasmania, but easing off in Victoria and starting to warm up too across the east after a few relatively cool days.
And that high pressure system is going to push the showers and storms north, away from central and eastern Queensland after what's been a really wet and stormy period.
So, let's start here in Queensland now, and we can see some morning showers and storms moving off the Central Coast after Wednesday afternoon and Wednesday evening's thunderstorms.
And then, when you see the thunderstorms redevelop in the afternoon and evening they'll be focused right out here in western and north-western Queensland. So, a dry and mostly sunny day for Brisbane on the way, with a top of 28 °C, and the same story right across the south-east and central Queensland. Rockhampton, 29 °C. Just an early shower and then a mostly dry day.
For New South Wales and the ACT, right in the grip of that high pressure system, so barely a cloud in the sky across the entire state of New South Wales, as well as the ACT.
A chilly start in Canberra with a low of 3 °C, I should say, and a top of 23 °C. Sunny there. Sunny also, and 24 °C, in Sydney. Temperatures in the mid-20s pretty much statewide. Beautiful day across New South Wales and the ACT.
For Victoria, there'll still be a bit of cloud and some morning showers around in the south, including particularly for the eastern suburbs of Melbourne. But then it'll fine up as that high pressure system comes in.
You can see it coming there, in through western Victoria later in the day, so that will clear out much of the cloud in the afternoon. It'll be mostly sunny by the end of the day. Temperatures still a little on the cool side but starting to warm up.
It'll be warmer in the days to come, around 20 °C or a little less across the south and warming up into the mid-20s in the north. Melbourne, as I say, cloudy start with maybe a shower or two around in the morning, but then partly cloudy to even mostly sunny by the end of the day.
In Tasmania, typical westerly flow, so some showers around on the west coast and ranges. You'll see them contract to the south later in the day as that same high pressure system comes into play. Drier further east and plenty of sunshine around too.
Hobart, mostly sunny with a top of 20 °C. Launceston warming up to 23 °C. For South Australia, similar conditions in the east. Dry, sunny and warming up to the mid- to high-20s. Adelaide, mostly sunny, top of 25 °C.
But then we'll see some showers and storms come in attached to this trough system in the west. Severe thunderstorms are likely in the far west and north-west of South Australia, and some of that weather will reach places like Coober Pedy and Ceduna, more likely later in the day, into the evening in particular.
For Western Australia, dry and quite warm in the South West Land Division. So, Perth going for a mostly sunny top of 28 °C. Temperatures in the mid-20s and even up into the 30s a little further inland.
And then you can see this trough system that's going to be the focus of showers and storms through the Goldfields and then through the south-eastern districts as well, and up the border into the Northern Territory as well. Again, severe thunderstorms are possible in the far south-east, closer to this trough system in the afternoon and the evening.
And lastly, in the Territory showers and storms are possible pretty much across the whole Territory, but the focus will very much be on this area just west and north of Alice Springs, where some heavier thunderstorms are possible.
So again, severe thunderstorms are on the forecast, including possibly for Alice Springs, although more likely areas further west of there. And some of those storms could be quite slow-moving.
So, they'll present a risk of flash flooding through some parts of the southern and central Northern Territory. And then there'll be some showers and the odd thunderstorm around Darwin as well, with a top of 34 °C.
