Structure fire in Katherine

Northern Territory Police and NT Fire and Rescue Service are investigating a structure fire in Katherine that occurred yesterday afternoon.

Shortly before 2pm, a woman observed smoke coming from inside a cupboard in her residence on Maluka Road.

NT Police responded and ensured all occupants were evacuated safely from the house.

Fire crews extinguished the fire that had progressed rapidly, destroying the bedroom and living areas of the home.

It is understood two children had been playing with a lighter.

Chief Fire Officer Mark Spain said, "Sunday serves as a sobering reminder of how quickly structure fires can start and spread, as well as the importance of working smoke alarms. Police and Fire crews responded quickly and professionally, and luckily no one was injured".

Investigations are continuing.
