Sunny Winter's Day, Showers Hit East Coast

BOM
Hello, it's Angus at the Bureau of Meteorology. It's Monday, the 6th of July. Let's dive into the weather forecast around the country.

There was a lot of rain at the end of last week, but over the weekend gone by, that has really cleared up. And for most, we've settled into a calm weather pattern with this big high pressure area to the south influencing conditions over much of Australia.

But as we know, the wind goes anti-clockwise around a high pressure area, and that means we're seeing south or south-easterly winds just driving onto this eastern coastline here. And that is bringing showers and large waves to much of the New South Wales coast, and parts of the Queensland coast as well. So outside of that, we're looking dry, but eastern areas could get a little bit of rainfall.

Now, Brisbane itself is pretty sheltered by the islands, so not expecting any rainfall in Brisbane. It should be a pleasant day there with a high of 21 °C. But we could certainly see passing showers around the Gold Coast and Surfers Paradise, the Sunshine Coast and Noosa. Maybe not so much the Wide Bay, a little more sheltered around Bundaberg, but from Mackay up to Cairns, those showers are likely to kick back in. Don't anticipate significant rainfall to accumulate across the day. Fine through inland and western parts of Queensland, maybe a shower in the very, very far west. And one other thing to note: some large waves. We've got a Hazardous Surf Warning from K'gari down to the Gold Coast.

For New South Wales, we will also have showers just blowing onshore from the ocean across eastern areas, and really could hit anyone to the eastern side of the Great Dividing Range. And yes, that means another showery day in Sydney, high of 18 °C. In the past 24 hours before recording this video, rainfall numbers have generally been between 2 and 10 mm across eastern New South Wales, and that is expected to repeat itself tomorrow. So what that means, it's not heavy rain, it's not bucketing down, but there's enough showers passing through across the day that it makes you feel like it's been a wet one when it's all said and done. There will be large waves across this coastline as well, so take care near the water. For the western side of the mountains, there will be some fine weather in store, but you've got to get through a cool morning first.

Cool, maybe frosty start around the Canberra area and out towards south-west New South Wales, and then fine.

That's the trend here. A cool, icy, frosty morning for Victoria that should brighten up, clear up, be a nice settled sunny day, but maximum temperatures are going to stay a little bit fresh, between 13 °C and 15 °C across the state.

And rinse and repeat down here as well. It's a settled, crisp winter's day. It will have a chilly morning. There will be some frost and some fog around that will clear up to a pretty bright afternoon. High temperatures in Tasmania between 13 °C and 15 °C. Hobart just at the low end of that. Low shower risk in the morning for Hobart, then the day is fine.

And it's a similar trend out here as well. Bit of a fresh morning, likely some frost, likely some fog that dissipates, and you get a nice, clear, bright winter's afternoon with maximum temperatures in the mid to upper teens across most of South Australia. There's a chance of 1 or 2 showers out towards the west coast and up to the North West Pastoral district as well, but they'll be very hit and miss, and not too many areas will receive them.

We have settled weather across Western Australia. It's a little warmer out this way than what it is across most of the remainder of the nation, and that means our morning temperatures here are more in the 5 °C to 10 °C range, and our daytime maximum temperatures, upper teens to low 20s across the southern half of the state, with primarily sunny skies, and mid 20s up around the north and north-west.

And for the tropics, we could see a few showers around the north interior of Western Australia, but it doesn't look like rainfall out that way will hit any of the towns or cities on this map. Instead, we will have a settled but cool day across southern NT, and a sunny and mild day across all of the northern coasts of the country, and maybe 1 or 2 showers up around Arnhem Land in the east of the Top End.
