Support for Bay Trail revamp

More than 95 percent of community members who had their say through a survey, quick poll and drop-in sessions shared their support for our draft concept plan to revitalise the region's iconic Bay Trail.

This premier trail, which runs for nine kilometres from North Shore to Western Beach Foreshore and along the Geelong Waterfront, is integral to a healthier community and attracting visitors to the municipality.

Key features of the proposed plan include improving trail alignment and fixing gaps, revegetation of native species, widening the trail to accommodate a variety of users and installing rest stops with seating.

Consultation from 25 September to 22 October 2023 reached more than 3,000 people. We received 136 contributions to the survey and quick poll, and spoke to 30 people during two face-to-face sessions.

What the community liked most about the draft concept plan were the proposed improvements to trail surface, width, alignment and accessibility, resolution of gaps and the potential for economic, health and tourism benefits.

Respondents raised concerns about broader connections to access the Bay Trail, conflicts between users on the trail, how the project will be implemented and funded in the future, lighting, environment and waste management.

The majority of survey participants were from Rippleside (14 percent), Geelong (13 percent), Geelong West (nine percent), Belmont (six percent) and Drumcondra (five percent).

The City will be seeking funding opportunities to deliver staged improvements once the plan is finalised.

Mayor Trent Sullivan

We really appreciate the insights that respondents provided on the draft concept plan and how it can be improved.

We want to improve safety and accessibility along the Bay Trail, which is one of the gems in our region's crown.

Deputy Mayor Anthony Aitken

It was great to hear from a diverse range of people who use the Bay Trail to exercise, sightsee and meet with loved ones.

Community members were pleased with the proposed improvements to the trail, economic and tourism benefits and how revegetation could improve and protect the surrounding environment.

This feedback will be used by the City to inform the Bay Trail Revitalisation study and finalisation of the concept plan, before it comes to Council.
