If an infection occurs following a hip replacement or even a seemingly simple bone fracture, the consequences can be serious. These infections are difficult to treat because bacteria can hide deep within bone tissue and form biofilms, which make them highly resistant to antibiotics.
Treatment is therefore often prolonged and may involve repeated operations, extensive courses of antibiotics and, in the worst cases, lifelong complications or amputation.
Precision Antibiotics—a spin-off company founded by drug delivery specialists from DTU—hopes to change this treatment regime. As the name suggests, the company develops systems that deliver medicine precisely to the site in the body that needs it.
