The SUSTech – King's project to set up a Joint Education Institute (JEI) in Shenzhen, China has made two significant steps forward this month with final approval from the Chinese Ministry of Education and provisional approval the UK General Medical Council (GMC). The project can now move to the next stage of the GMC approval process, the site visit. If this stage is successful, student recruitment will begin in the spring and teaching on the joint programmes will start in September 2022.

This is a very important landmark in the journey to forge a very significant partnership with one of the leading Chinese universities, one that offers substantial potential for future development of King's. I wish to thank the many colleagues who have worked collegiately and with great dedication to meet these latest milestones and I look forward to supporting the necessary steps required so that we can invite applications from prospective students to programmes offered by the JEI."– Professor Richard Trembath, Senior Vice President (Health & Life Sciences) and Executive Director of King's Health Partners

The JEI will initially deliver three joint programmes: an MBBS in Medicine, a BSc in Biomedical Science and a BEng in Biomedical Engineering. Teaching on the joint programmes will take place in Shenzhen and will be delivered by academic staff from both partner institutions. There will be opportunities for both full-time secondments of 4-5 years and flexible contracts for King's teaching staff. The lead King's post in China – the Executive Dean for the JEI – is currently being recruited.
