A kaleidoscope of colour and culture has illuminated Sydney this Diwali, bringing the festival's timeless message of hope and renewal to life.

The NSW Government's annual Diwali celebration brought together community leaders and guests at the Museum of Contemporary Art, featuring a spectacular display of golden lights illuminating the sails of the Sydney Opera House.

Community leaders and guests joined the celebrations in Sydney yesterday including those from our Hindu, Sikh, Jain and Buddhist communities.

Diwali, also known as the Festival of Lights, recognises victory over darkness, new beginnings and gratitude for the year ahead.

It is a time when people pray for health, knowledge and peace, celebrated by lighting small oil lamps called diyas.

Premier of NSW Chris Minns said:

"I want to wish everyone a joyful Diwali filled with light, happiness and prosperity.

"Diwali brings communities and generations together to celebrate triumph over darkness and good over evil.

"The Festival of Lights calls on all of us to value hope and belonging so that we can overcome divide and move forward in unity - now more than ever it's so important that we live out this important message.

Minister for Multiculturalism Steve Kamper said:

"Diwali brings light, joy, and togetherness. It's a time to honour tradition, celebrate community, and share in the warmth of connection.

"We are proud to play a part in honouring Diwali over the years, highlighting the importance culture and connection brings to our lives.

"When we bring communitiesand generations together, the state's rich diversity and spirit takes centre stage and everyone shines.
