New Community Facilities Planned for Densely Populated Area

NSW Gov

Work is underway to deliver a new sports field, playgrounds, picnic shelters and amphitheatre as part of a new parkland in one of the most densely populated areas of Australia.

Moore Park South is moving into its next stage with temporary fencing to be installed this week, ahead of construction and earthworks starting to deliver major elements of the Minns Labor Government's vision for the parkland.

With almost 790,000 people expected to live within five kilometres of the Moore Park South, by 2041 it's crucial we deliver this work now, so it is ready to be a backyard for thousands of people and their furry friends in the future.

Importantly other areas of the park, which are welcoming more people all the time, will remain open for the duration of these works. This next phase of work is expected to be completed by mid-2027.

An interim 12-hole golf course is also currently available as work continues to deliver the final 12-hole public golf course.

The park has been carefully designed to work with the existing landscape and retain as many mature trees as possible. While some trees will be removed the overall tree canopy will increase and all trees will be replaced using suitable native species to achieve a successful landscape outcome for the park, including mature plantings

Design and planning is also underway for multi-purpose sports courts, nature playground, amenities and additional parkland improvements. These works are expected to commence from mid-2027, with the full transformation of Moore Park South expected to be completed in 2028.

The community will be kept updated on access changes at Moore Park South throughout construction.

Once complete the new public park and updated golf course will include:

  • a nature playground
  • new pathways for running, walking and cycling
  • a full-size community sports field
  • multi-purpose sports courts and outdoor fitness equipment
  • large areas of parkland for people to picnic and relax
  • new amenities such as toilets, picnic tables and seating, space for food kiosks and lighting
  • expanded 90-bay driving range
  • 18-hole mini golf course
  • putting and chipping greens.

Minister for Planning and Public Spaces Paul Scully said:

"Moore Park South has already opened up new opportunities for people and their furry friends to enjoy public green space, on the doorstep of one of Australia's most densely populated areas.

"This next stage will add to that, delivering a new sports field, playgrounds, picnic shelters and great gathering spaces for families, sporting groups and local residents to enjoy.

"With more people calling inner Sydney home, it's vital that we make the most of our public land and create welcoming, accessible spaces that support healthier, more connected communities.

"Moore Park South is the backyard for thousands of Sydney residents and is becoming a more popular park to visit by the day. The addition of these facilities will make it even better."
