Territory Day Wrap Up

Northern Territory Police, Fire and Emergency Service are pleased with the general public's behaviour however, an increase in fire activity was concerning.

The Northern Territory Fire and Rescue Service (NTFRS) responded to close to 400 grass fires in a 24 hour period including, a large fire in Durack resulting in the temporary closure of Tiger Brennan Drive.

Assistant Chief Fire Officer Joshua Fischer said the large number of fires attended by firefighters was problematic.

"In 2019, the NTFRS responded to 219 grassfires over a two day period during Territory Day celebrations.

The total number of incidents attended to by NTFRS, between 6:00pm to 11:00pm:

  • 313x Grassfires
  • 15x Bin/Rubbish fires
  • 4x Structure fires reported
  • 1x hazmat incident
  • 1x Road crash rescue
  • 1x Automatic fire alarm
  • 2x Smoke complaint

"Our career, volunteer and auxiliary firefighters worked above and beyond to limit damage to property. It's a testament to the commitment of our members who serve and protect our community".

NT Police were kept busy with multiple reports of misuse of fireworks from vehicles. A total of five cautions were issued for the use of fireworks outside of the approved period time.

Police conducted patrols at the Mindil Beach event, which drew in large crowds that were well behaved. There was no reported injuries or significant incidents.

Today's weather brings easing fire weather conditions with high to very high fire danger across the Top End and low to moderate elsewhere. The NTFRS has enhanced crewing in the greater Darwin region today to provide additional response capability if the need arises.

The public are urged to stay vigilant and monitor any fires that may have occurred on their properties for flare ups.
