TSU Launches Supercollider Particle Modeling Course

Tomsk State University is launching a school where scientists master the Geant4 software package. This tool is used in mega-science projects for research in high-energy physics. In particular, Geant4 developed at CERN is used to model the passage of particles through matter in experiments at the Large Hadron Collider. In Russia, it will be used in various studies at the NICA supercollider.

Different scholars from Tomsk State University, Tomsk Polytechnic University, the Joint Institute for Nuclear Research (Dubna), the Institute of Nuclear Physics of the Academy of Sciences of the Republic of Uzbekistan and other scientific centers were among the participants of the school. One of the key lecturers was Vladimir Ivanchenko, Senior Researcher of the Laboratory of Data Analysis of High Energy Physics, Faculty of Physics, TSU and one of the Geant4 developers.

- The aim of the school is to master the software package for solving various research tasks, says Vladimir Ivanchenko. - Geant4 is a system of libraries for simulating the passage of elementary particles through matter. Applications created on the basis of this software package are able to simulate any installation or detector and radiation source.

Geant4 is not only used in basic science. Its applications include high-energy physics, nuclear and accelerator physics, space-related research and the development of new radiation safety methods, as well as medical applications ranging from radiation therapy to nuclear diagnostics. Modeling ensures that the data clinicians get data to understand how radiation interacts with biological tissues at the cellular level.

- Geant4 is not a ready-made program, but a platform for writing simulation programs, so each researcher customizes this tool for himself, - explains Nikita Chaly, a researcher at the Laboratory of Data Analysis of High Energy Physics of the TSU Faculty of Physics and a master class presenter at the school. - As part of practical classes, participants learn how to customize the tool for specific tasks. For example, our laboratory is modeling particle detectors as part of a large project related to the NICA supercollider. Colleagues from other research centers will write programs for their particular studies.

The Geant4 School is a study track, which is a significant part of a large-scale project implemented at TSU with the support of a mega-grant from the Russian government. The project is aimed at studying the fundamental properties of matter and the mechanisms operating in the early Universe. The research will be carried out at the NICA (Nuclotron based Ion Collider fAcility) collider, one of the largest international scientific projects in Russia. The Laboratory of Data Analysis of High Energy Physics of TSU trains personnel for experiments at the supercollider and in the development of some of the equipment for NICA.
