Professors of the Faculty of Philology of Tomsk State University participated in the XIX Symposium of the International Dostoevsky Society "Dostoevsky: Text, Tradition, Translation", held in Buenos Aires (Argentina). More than 130 researchers from around the world joined the Symposium and discussed the translation of the classics, its perception in other cultures and literary traditions. The Faculty of Philology trains such specialists - translators of fiction.
The symposium brought together researchers and translators of the Russian writer from Argentina, USA, Canada, Spain, Turkey, China, Croatia, Japan, Poland and other countries. The Russian group included 20 well-known researchers from Tomsk, Moscow, St. Petersburg, Petrozavodsk, Yaroslavl, Ufa and Rostov-on-Don.
Two scientists from the Faculty of Philology represented Tomsk region at the symposium: Tatyana Korotchenko - Associate Professor of the Department of the History of Russian Literature of the 20th-21st Centuries and Literary Work and Alexei Kazakov - Professor of the Department of Russian and Foreign Literature. They talked about the English-language translations of the Writer's Diary and about the possible source of the image of Dostoevsky's "tear of the child" (based on "The Brothers Karamazov").
The participants spoke about Dostoevsky's poetics, philosophical and religious aspects of his works. Special attention was paid to the anniversary of the novel "Teenager" (150 years since writing) and Dostoevsky's translations into different languages.
Tatyana Korotchenko presented the results that she received as part of a grant from the Russian Science Foundation "Political Problems "Writer's Diary of F.M. Dostoevsky" (supervisor - Elena Novikova, professor of the Department of Russian and Foreign Literature).
- The interest in Dostoevsky's works is growing all over the world. The writer is a multifaceted personality, there are many research questions around him, - said Tatyana Korotchenko. - The symposium helped us, first of all, to test the scientific results obtained in the framework of the project supported by the RSF grant. Besides, such events are an opportunity to establish strong scientific ties with representatives of different cultures and professional communities. International cooperation offers prospects for further development.

Following the trip and within the framework of the grant, the team is preparing a monograph on Dostoevsky's Diary, as well as an international scientific workshop on this topic.
Literary translation today is becoming one of the most popular and at the same time rare professions. Starting from the new academic year, the Faculty of Philology offers a new direction - Literary Translation. In Russia today there are only two such programs: at TSU and the Maxim Gorky Literature Institute.
- Mastery of literary translation is not only about mastery of a foreign language. This is about professional work with a work created by another author, about the ability to create a literary text and convincingly from an aesthetic point of view to convey in Russian all the features of the original. The modern translator of fiction knows economically attractive market segments (which languages and genres are in demand today) and knows how to build professional relations with publishers, - added Tatyana Korotchenko.
Students who choose the module on literary translation study the foreign language, literature and culture of the country of the language studied, the theory and practice of translation with special attention to fiction and documentary prose (fiction and non-fiction).
The workshops are led by well-known specialists in the field of literary translation Alexandra Glebovskaya and Andrei Olear.
