UCSF Health Wins National Honors for Surgical Success

The American College of Surgeons National Surgical Quality Improvement Program (ACS NSQIP®) has recognized UCSF Health for achieving meritorious outcomes for surgical patient care in 2024.

"Receiving the ACS NSQIP Meritorious award for outcomes is a tremendous honor for UCSF Health," said Amy Lu, MD, MPH, UCSF chief quality officer and vice president. "The achievement reflects outstanding care across the entire perioperative continuum and the dedication of our clinical teams. Their commitment to excellence ensures that even the most complex and vulnerable patients receive the highest standard of care and underscores the culture of teamwork, safety, and equity that defines UCSF Health."

UCSF Health is one of 76 out of 609 eligible ACS NSQIP participating hospitals that have been deemed meritorious for their composite score in eight clinical areas. The 76 hospitals achieved the distinction based on an outstanding composite quality score in two groupings: "All Cases" and "High Risk." UCSF Health has been recognized on the "High Risk" Meritorious list.

"This recognition by ACS NSQIP underscores UCSF Health's unwavering commitment to advancing the science and practice of surgery while prioritizing patient safety and exceptional outcomes," said Julie Ann Sosa, MD, MA, chair of the UCSF Department of Surgery. "It reflects the dedication and collaboration of our surgical teams, who consistently rise to meet the challenges of delivering world-class care to every patient, including those with the most complex conditions. As a department, we are proud to contribute to UCSF Health's legacy of excellence in surgical care."

ACS NSQIP is the preeminent nationally validated quality improvement program that measures and enhances the care of surgical patients. The goal of ACS NSQIP is to reduce surgical morbidity and mortality and to provide a firm foundation for surgeons to apply what is known as the best scientific evidence to the practice of surgery. ACS NSQIP is a major program of the ACS and is currently used in over 850 adult or pediatric hospitals. Hospitals participating in ACS NSQIP are designated as ACS Surgical Quality Partners and required to track the outcomes of inpatient and outpatient surgical procedures and collect data that assesses patient safety. This data can be used to design patient safety programs and improve the quality of surgical care.

"This prestigious recognition highlights the extraordinary efforts of our teams to continuously improve surgical care and patient outcomes," said Elizabeth Wick, MD, UCSF professor of surgery and vice chair of Quality and Safety. "At UCSF, we are deeply committed to fostering a culture of quality and safety, where data-driven approaches and innovative practices guide our care delivery. Achieving this distinction on the 'High Risk' Meritorious list reflects our dedication to ensuring the best possible outcomes for even the most vulnerable patients."

For three years in a row, UCSF Health has been recognized by three of the nation's most prestigious quality benchmarking systems - U.S. News & World Report Best Hospitals Honor Roll, a five-star rating from the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS), and Vizient Top Performer recognition - and it is the only public academic medical center to receive all three in 2025.
