UNESCO Assistant Director-General for Priority Africa and External Relations meets H.E. Mr Igor Fissenko

On 23 September, Mr Firmin Matoko, Assistant Director-General for Priority Africa and External relations at UNESCO met with H.E. Mr Igor Fissenko, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary and Permanent Delegate of Belarus to UNESCO.

On this occasion, in light of the statement of the United Nations Secretary-General, Antonio Guterres, of 11 September 2020, the Assistant Director-General raised issues regarding areas within the mandate of UNESCO, notably freedom of expression and the safety of journalists, including also that of intellectuals such as Svetlana Alexievich, 2015 Nobel Prize Laureate in Literature.

Ambassador Fissenko took note of the concerns raised and informed the Assistant Director-General of the measures being taken.
