Safer Parking Reminder As Dry Season Events Return

Darwin City Council
  • City of Darwin is reminding the community to park safely at events across the upcoming dry season.

  • Illegally parked vehicles can block emergency access, disrupt residents and force pedestrians onto the road, creating unsafe situations.

  • Visitors are encouraged to plan ahead by checking event information online, including parking maps and access points, and allowing extra time to find appropriate parking.

City of Darwin is reminding the community to park safely at events across the upcoming dry season, with large crowds expected across the city's major event calendar.

Events including the Mindil Beach Sunset Market, Nightcliff Seabreeze Festival, Jingili Water Festival, Bass in the Grass, Territory Day, Greek Glenti Festival, NAIDOC March and Darwin Festival are expected to attract large crowds.

Alongside this, the start of dry season sport will bring increased use of sporting ovals, particularly for junior competitions, making safer parking essential for the safety of children and families.

Mindil Beach Sunset Market is one of Darwin's popular attractions and kicks off this Thursday 30 April. To ensure events like the market run smoothly and safely, attendees are asked to use designated parking areas only.

Lord Mayor Peter Styles said responsible parking plays an important role in keeping the community safe during busy events.

"With thousands of people attending Darwin's iconic dry season events, it's essential that everyone parks in allocated areas and follows the road rules," he said.

"Parking on verges, footpaths, driveways or across emergency access points is not only illegal, but it can also block emergency vehicles and force pedestrians, including children and those with accessibility issues onto the road, creating serious safety risks."

"We want everyone to have a safe and positive experience when attending these great events," Mr Styles added.

Rangers enforce the Australian Road Rules and local by-laws; infringements can be issued for illegal parking and if your vehicle is obstructing emergency access, forcing pedestrians onto a road or is creating a serious safety risk - the vehicle can be towed.

"Enforcement is about safety and access for everyone," Mr Styles said.

Visitors are encouraged to plan ahead by checking event information online, including parking maps and access points provided by event organisers, and allowing extra time to find appropriate parking.

Carpooling, walking and public transport are also recommended where possible.

Key parking reminders include:

  • Do not park on verges, nature strips, footpaths or bike paths

  • Do not block driveways or emergency access points

  • Do not stop your vehicle if that part of the road has a yellow line
