Victoria Tops Australia's Food, Fibre Exports at $22.1B

Victoria's food and fibre exporters have delivered a record-breaking year, with export value rising 10 per cent to $22.1 billion in 2024–25 and securing the state's place as Australia's leading food and fibre exporter for a second straight year.

The result, released in the 2024–25 Victorian Food and Fibre Export Performance Report, points to a sector that is not just growing, but evolving. Victorian exporters are moving more product, into more markets, and up the value chain, representing a shift that is strengthening the state's trade resilience and global reach.

Meat remained Victoria's biggest export category at $8.2 billion, followed by grains at $4.5 billion, dairy at $2.8 billion and horticulture at a record $1.9 billion. Horticulture was a standout performer, accounting for almost half of Australia's total horticulture export value, while almond exports surged 71 per cent to $750 million, reinforcing Victoria's status as the nation's almond capital.

The story behind the numbers is diversification. China remained Victoria's largest market at $4.8 billion, but growth was broad-based across the globe, with exports to markets outside the top 10 rising 21 per cent over the year. Nearly half of all export income now comes from markets outside Victoria's top five, up from 39 per cent in 2019–20.

That spread is significant. It reflects a more confident, more competitive Victorian export base, and one that is adapting to shifting demand, navigating volatility and finding opportunity in a fast-changing global market. The United States also continued to grow as a major destination, driven by strong demand for Victorian beef.

Victoria's international advantage is backed by our network of 23 trade and investment offices across the world, helping local businesses connect with 174 markets. New trade agreements with India, the United Arab Emirates and the United Kingdom are also opening doors for Victorian red meat, dairy, grains and horticulture exporters.

Victoria is scaling up, diversifying and exporting with confidence. Its food and fibre sector is setting the pace.
