Victorian man charged with threatening MP

A Victorian man, 54, is due to appear before Ringwood Magistrates' Court today (16 November 2023) for allegedly making violent threats to a Federal Member of Parliament.

The man was summonsed to appear before the Court after AFP officers executed a search warrant at his Doncaster home on 30 March, 2023. A laptop computer was seized during the warrant and subjected to digital forensic analysis.

Police will allege the man sent an email to a Commonwealth government department threatening violence against the Federal Member of Parliament.

He was charged with one count of using a carriage service to menace, harass or cause offence, contrary to section 474.17 of the Criminal Code 1995 (Cth).

The maximum penalty for this offence is 5 years' imprisonment.
