Vital strategy to shape our city's transport future

Community consultation will begin today on one of the most important issues facing the Gold Coast – transport.

Mayor Tom Tate said he wants to hear from every resident about what issues are important to them to help inform our new Transport Strategy.

"The Gold Coast lifestyle is the envy of every other city in Australia so it's no wonder we're estimated to grow from 650,000 people to more than 1 million by 2041," Mayor Tate said.

"This population surge requires us to ensure we get transport right. Addressing traffic congestion will require not only new infrastructure but clever new thinking that doesn't always include a private motor vehicle."

Mayor Tate said this shift had already begun with the uptake of electric vehicles, autonomous vehicles, ride-sharing and e-mobility technology.'

The second quarter of this year saw 21,907 passengers use the HOPO Gold Coast Ferry. April 2022 was a record month with more than 9,000 passengers.

During the same period, there were 105,500 trips and 39,700 active riders using the City's bike share scheme.

The city's autonomous shuttle bus trial in Main Beach has seen more than 1,300 passengers transported – this technology is helping revolutionise urban travel by improving road safety, mobility and environmental outcomes.

"Ultimately, the way we move is changing. Our access needs and challenges are evolving, sustainable solutions are a priority and emerging technologies are increasing," Mayor Tate said.

"This is our opportunity to deliver a strategy for the future and we need input to protect the lifestyle that makes the coast a great place to live, work and visit. The future of transport is in your hands."
