WA Pharmacists Set For Expanded Healthcare Role

  • Applications are open for eligible pharmacists to enrol in the Enhanced Access Community Pharmacy Pilot
  • The initiative will make it easier for Western Australians to access care for everyday health conditions
  • Participating pharmacists to begin accredited training in September 2025
  • Cook Labor Government subsidy to encourage uptake in regional WA

Applications are now open for eligible community pharmacists across the State to train and take part in the Cook Labor Government's Enhanced Access Community Pharmacy Pilot, a key initiative making it easier for Western Australians to receive treatment for everyday health conditions.

Developed with the Pharmacy Guild of Western Australia, Pharmaceutical Society of Australia, and leading universities, the training program will equip pharmacists with the skills and knowledge to treat a range of common conditions.

Training for successful applicants will begin in September 2025 through accredited Graduate Certificate programs.

Once qualified and authorised, participating pharmacists will be able to diagnose and treat common conditions such as ear infections, acne and asthma delivering more accessible, community-based care across WA.

The initiative builds on previous pharmacy-based initiatives in WA, including treatment for urinary tract infections, resupply of oral contraceptive pills, and pharmacist-administered vaccinations.

The Cook Government is also subsidising training costs for some applicants through a $1.26 million investment in the 2025-26 State Budget.

Eligible pharmacists in rural and remote areas will attract a higher subsidy.

The program is on track to launch late next year, subject to training completion.

Applications are now open to eligible pharmacists who meet the training and practice criteria, including registration and recent employment in a WA community pharmacy.

As stated by Health Minister Meredith Hammat:

"This practical initiative will make it easier for Western Australians to access diagnosis and treatment for everyday health conditions.

"By enhancing the skills of community pharmacists, we are reducing pressure on hospitals and GPs while giving patients safe, effective care options closer to home.

"Through our State Government-funded subsidy, we're strongly encouraging rural and remote pharmacists to apply for the training, to boost access to care right across our vast State.

"The pilot reflects our commitment to making the most of our highly trained pharmacy workforce and strengthening care in the community."
