Water Main Upgrades Protecting GWW's Service Network

Greater Western Water (GWW) is continuing to invest in the long-term reliability of its water network, with 15 water main repair and upgrade projects currently underway across Melbourne's west.

While pouring a glass of water may seem as simple as turning on a tap, there is a vast network of underground pipes working around the clock to deliver safe and reliable water services to homes, businesses and communities.

As part of its renewals program, GWW regularly repairs and or replaces ageing and faulty water mains to help prevent leaks and bursts, improve network performance, and ensure the system can continue meeting the needs of a growing region.

GWW General Manager Asset Planning and Delivery, Ian Burton, said the renewal works are critical to maintaining the reliability of essential water services.

"Most people don't see the extensive network of pipes beneath our streets, but it is vital to everyday life," Mr Burton said.

"When we talk about renewal projects, it can look different depending on what the water main needs. Sometimes we need to replace an entire pipeline, other times we need to reline the inside of the water main, all of which helps reduce leaks and bursts, prevents corrosion, improves water quality and extends the lifespan of the water main," he said.

Across GWW's service area, renewal projects are being delivered in a variety of environments, from busy city streets and suburban neighbourhoods to growing regional communities.

One example is the current water main upgrade on Francis Street in Melbourne's CBD, where GWW is replacing the old water main, nearing the end of its operational life, with a new one.

Works commenced in August and are currently underway, upgrading the water main along Francis Street, with completion expected in December 2026.

While residents may notice temporary traffic changes, parking impacts, construction activity or changes to water pressure and temperature during works, GWW works to minimise disruptions and complete projects as safely and efficiently as possible.

"We know this essential construction can be disruptive for local residents, businesses and communities, which is why we work hard to minimise impacts wherever possible," Mr Burton said.

"These renewals are an important investment in the long-term reliability of our network and help ensure we can continue delivering safe and reliable water straight to our customers' taps," he said.

GWW is delivering its water main renewal program in partnership with Downer and Interflow. There are currently water main renewal projects underway in Abbotsford, Albanvale, Altona North, Brooklyn, Deer Park, Essendon, Melbourne CBD, Spotswood, St Albans, Sunshine North and Sunshine West.
