Wishy Washy White: Stands for Nothing Trifecta

Members,

Three times in recent weeks, Labor Leader Rebecca White has had an opportunity to show leadership, and three times she has failed.

There's no wonder why David O'Byrne is breathing down her neck, backed by unions, members and fellow MPs who are desperate for a real leader at this week's national conference show-down.

Wishy Washy White is making an art of sitting on a fence and it must be very uncomfortable.

First, Ms White has flip-flopped on the Macquarie Point Stadium, hinting to both those for and against that she is with them.

Ms White said she wouldn't back a stadium, but then voted for the very Bill that enables its independent assessment. Then, Ms White claimed she supported the Bill because it's about more than just the Stadium, yet she now seeks to add a sunset clause that makes it only about the Stadium.

Second, Ms White has failed to state whether Labor supports the Marinus Link project.

Ms White and Labor have been asked countless times in Parliament, at press conferences and on radio: do you support Marinus? It's a simple yes or no question, yet no one can get a straight answer out of Ms White or her team.

Third, Ms White is having a bet each way on our nation-leading planning reforms.

Ms White and Labor have done nothing but criticise and side with the Greens to oppose our policy that will take the politics out of planning and help to build more houses by introducing independent Development Approval Panels. Yet, on the quiet, they've been telling the business community that they support it.

The Stadium, Marinus and Planning are three critically important issues for Tasmania, and a leader should be able to state their position.

In contrast, our plan is clear.

We support the Macquarie Point stadium and a Tasmanian AFL team.

We support Marinus Link subject to sensible limits and are working to secure its future on terms that put Tasmania first.

We support planning reforms that will help to turn more land into more houses for Tasmanians.

That's the leadership Tasmanians deserve. Not a Wishy Washy Ms White who tries to stand for everything and finishes up standing for nothing.
