Wonthaggi's secrets revealed

Bass Coast Shire Council and the Wonthaggi Business and Tourism Association today (Thursday, 3 December) launched a new visitor campaign - Wonthaggi, Discover our Secret.

Developed in collaboration with Wonthaggi businesses and community groups, the campaign is designed to ignite interest in the town's rich culture, history, natural assets and tourism offerings.

The Discover Our Secret theme will be reflected across a wide range of activities, inspiring visitors to take a closer look at Wonthaggi's diverse attractions and unsung treasures.

The first stage of the Discover Our Secret campaign will be rolled out over the coming months and will include town centre flags, public art, historical talks and business support.

It will also capitalise on the works being undertaken on the historic railway station in Apex Park, Bass Coast Rail Trail town access points and Wonthaggi's laneways.

Bass Coast Mayor, Cr Brett Tessari, said the campaign had been developed in close consultation with business and community groups to shine a light on the many wonders Wonthaggi has to offer.

"Those of us who have lived here for a few generations, or just a few years, sometimes take for granted just how many fascinating and rare assets there are in our town and region," Cr Tessari said.

"We think it's time for Wonthaggi to share its secrets with the world. By helping people to discover our secrets, we can generate fresh interest in Wonthaggi and attract people to visit, live and invest in the town.

"We think that the campaign will also inspire local residents to discover something new about the amazing place they live"

Cr Tessari said the Campaign will also further elevate Wonthaggi's profile with State and Federal Governments and boost investment in the Town, with a focus on unlocking opportunities for new business, urban relocation and jobs growth.

"With our new secondary school, hospital expansion and regional university hub, we couldn't be better positioned to attract people to enjoy the secrets of our great lifestyle at the heart of Gippsland," Cr Tessari said.

President of the Wonthaggi Business and Tourism Association, Amy Easton, said that the campaign was a welcome step toward recovery from Victoria's COVID-19 lockdown.

"While 2020 presented challenges for many local businesses, I believe that we now have an exciting opportunity to strongly present a new face of Wonthaggi to the community and external markets that will generate significant economic and social benefits," Ms Easton said.

"The spotlight is on our town as the regional centre of Bass Coast and the Discover Our Secret campaign couldn't come at a better time for local businesses, who are keen to work together with Council and the State Government through new initiatives that will help us get back on our feet and promote Wonthaggi.

"This is not just a campaign for summer but will be of enormous value in elevating our profile over the long term and significantly contribute to our town's recovery and growth."
