Work To Commence On Doherty's House Café

We've reached an exciting milestone on the Doherty's House Café project, with the construction contract awarded and work to commence in the coming weeks.

This important bluestone landmark will be transformed into a vibrant 50-seat café with a landscaped outdoor dining area and fenced garden, paying homage to the site's history by incorporating the original bluestone walls and chimney.

Built in the 1870s, Doherty's House was left in ruins following the 1969 bushfires which ravaged the area and destroyed the building's wooden structures.

In 2021, the ruins were identified as an important example of the area's European heritage and became protected by Council's heritage overlay, and preservation works commenced on the site in 2022.

Wyndham City is investing over $2 million to transform the bluestone ruins of Doherty's House into a café, which will be run by The Riverside Group.

The café is expected to open its doors in late 2026.

Wyndham City Mayor, Cr Mia Shaw, said the Doherty's House Café would blend historic character with modern design to create a unique dining destination in Tarneit.

"This exciting project will breathe new life into Doherty's House and is part of Council's ongoing commitment to enhancing community spaces and local amenities," Cr Shaw said.

"It will provide a welcoming space for families, friends, and visitors to gather and enjoy Tarneit's history and charm."

Wyndham City's Deputy Mayor and Wimba Ward Councillor Josh Gilligan added: "This transformation is an inspired way of turning this bluestone ruin into a functional space for families to enjoy."

"I can't wait to see the café come to life and I know that the Riverside Group, who have a long-standing reputation for their successful venues in Werribee, will offer a high-quality experience."
