Work underway on upgrades to Railton Road

John Tucker,Liberal Member for Lyons

Proud Tasmanian civil contracting business Shaw Contracting has begun work on the first stage of shoulder widening and sealing works along 3.6 kilometres of Railton Road, just north of Railton.

The Tasmanian Liberal Government is committed to improving safety on Tasmanian roads, and this stage of improvements is being funded through our Road Safety Levy.

We want to significantly reduce deaths and serious injuries on our roads, and improving safety on rural roads is a priority under ourTowards Zero Action Plan 2020-2024.

Infrastructure improvements such as sealed shoulders help reduce the likelihood of crashes by providing additional space for drivers to recover control of a vehicle if it leaves the lane.

Railton Road is an important regional road, connecting the communities of Railton and Latrobe.

The road has a high proportion of heavy vehicle traffic servicing the surrounding agricultural area.

As well as shoulder widening and sealing, this project will also deliver improvements to roadside drainage.

Works are expected to be completed around March 2021. Road users are reminded to keep to reduced speed limits and obey traffic management controls in place during construction to keep themselves and our road workers safe.
