WorkSafe acknowledges the independent research by Associate Professor Dr Terri-Ann Berry at Auckland University of Technology (AUT) into airborne asbestos fibres from affected coloured sand products.
The results confirm that some of the recalled sand products can release respirable asbestos fibres into the air. We acknowledge that these findings may be concerning for those impacted, including workplaces and workers.
WorkSafe has completed an initial assessment of the study's findings and, based on the information available, our advice for workplaces remains unchanged. WorkSafe's advice has consistently been that any recalled or suspected affected coloured sand product in a workplace must be managed and removed as friable asbestos-containing material until proven otherwise.
Asbestos in coloured sand - advice for businesses
The findings reinforce the importance of taking a precautionary approach and support WorkSafe's advice to date. However, the study at this time does not provide enough information to quantify the occupational exposure risk.
We will continue to monitor any emerging evidence and consider it in the context of workplace advice.
WorkSafe's response to asbestos in coloured sand is based on the legal requirements set out in the Health and Safety at Work Act 2015 and supporting regulations. We're committed to supporting workplaces to manage their risks, ensuring they are well-informed about how to identify and manage any actual or potential presence of asbestos, and comply with the regulations.
Our inspectors have engaged with over 300 retailers and distribution centres. Our inspectors have observed a high-level of compliance and no enforcement action has been required.
WorkSafe is continuing to support the cross-agency response and to help ensure workplace health and safety advice is accurate, clear and consistent.
