World Cancer Day 2026: Easing Cancer's Grip on Aussies

Cancer Council NSW

Today is World Cancer Day, the 4th of February 2026. It reminds us of the importance of coming together to support one another through its global theme, United by Unique.

Each person's experience of cancer is unique, shaped not only by their diagnosis and treatment, but by their family, work, income, where they live and access care, life circumstances, and many other factors. Cancer Council is here to support all Australians impacted by cancer.

We're working to reduce the impact of cancer for all Australians and World Cancer Day is an opportunity for all of us to reflect on how far we have come, but to look forward to how much we can still do.

Support is available

13 11 20 is our Information and Support line where anyone impacted by cancer can call to talk about cancer, but there are many other ways we are in the community reducing the impact of cancer.

Working with Cancer Council NSW prevention teams, the Daffodil Centre, a partnership between Cancer Council NSW and the University of Sydney, is providing timely and relevant evidence to national and international policymakers to inform best-practice decision-making in cancer control.

We work on community‑focused education and risk reduction through the development of accessible health information supporting behaviour and policy change, informed by the community.

Advancing research and support for cancer patients

Thanks to advances in cancer research, prevention and early detection and treatment, more people are surviving cancer than ever before. Over 70% of people will likely survive five years after a cancer diagnosis., an increase from 51% since the late 1980s. More than ever do we need to support those living with and beyond cancer.

Australia's survival rates are improving, and our research and support needs to catch up to improve the lives of cancer survivors facing a 'new normal', today and for generations to come.

We're excited to launch the Australian Research Centre for Cancer Survivorship (ARCCS), a partnership between Cancer Council NSW and UNSW Sydney, a dedicated research centre working with survivors, researchers, clinicians and community to build a future where surviving cancer means thriving beyond it.

Together, with your support, it's all of us against cancer.
