Johns Hopkins University will begin construction on two new Homewood campus academic buildings for the Data Science and Artificial Intelligence Institute in early 2026. The work necessitates the closure of a short section of Wyman Park Drive to vehicle traffic starting on Jan. 7.
Although construction will require the temporary closure of one block of Wyman Park Drive—from Remington Avenue to Carnegie Way—for four years, campus will still be accessible via Art Museum Drive, 31st Street, and San Martin Drive; there are no changes planned to on-campus garage parking or flat lots.
Pedestrian access will remain open on Wyman Park Drive until summer 2026, and vehicle access to the Early Learning Center will continue until it moves to its new location near the intersection of San Martin Drive and University Parkway.
The new data science buildings will house classrooms, laboratories, faculty offices, and collaborative workspaces. Construction is scheduled to conclude in 2029 and is expected to create an estimated 4,490 jobs in Baltimore during the preconstruction and construction phases. The project will generate more than $505 million in net new economic impact within Baltimore and more than $800 million across Maryland.
"The establishment of DSAI and the construction of its new home on the Homewood campus is a key priority in the university's Ten for One strategic plan, positioning both Johns Hopkins and Baltimore for leadership in data science and artificial intelligence research, and fueling advancements in medicine, engineering, public health, and other fields," wrote Rob Hollister, senior vice president for real estate, capital strategy and development, in a message sent to faculty, staff, and students in December 2025.
The university aims to minimize impacts for the Homewood campus community and neighbors as construction gets underway. Johns Hopkins Facilities and Real Estate has launched a dedicated website for the project where it will share the latest news and construction progress via bi-weekly updates. Affiliates will also receive emails announcing details on specific closure dates and alternate routes. Updates will be made to digital campus maps, and detour information will be posted in parking garages.
