Since 2018, the Knox Rainbow Youth Action Group, supported by the Knox Youth Services team, has partnered with Momentum Studios Australia, providing young people aged 15 to 25 the opportunity to work on film projects.
Today - Wear It Purple Day - marks the premiere of the group's second short film, 'Still Me.', a project funded by Knox City Council, the Victorian Government and the Youth Affairs Council Victoria (YACVic) HEY Grants initiative.
'Still me.' stars Alanah Parkin (The Grand Scheme, Blackwood) and Kelsie Adelaide (MASKED, Flunk). The film follows the story of a non-binary teenager, Bailey. After coming to terms with their identity, it's time for Bailey to come out at school and navigate what this means for their social life. However, this proves harder than they anticipate, and Bailey is faced with a choice between social ridicule or the closet. Luckily, Bailey makes a new friend named Zach.
Speaking of the film, Knox resident and Co- Director Sam Jelley, said "'Still Me' is special because it's a film about a young queer person made by a group of young queer people. It touches on a lot of issues that young non-binary people, and trans people more broadly, face in the school system. While it might highlight some of the hardships of being queer, shows the importance of queer spaces and how much just one person can help".
While COVID restrictions have prevented an in-person premiere, the group are thrilled to launch the film on Wear It Purple Day, a day that strives to foster supportive, safe, empowering and inclusive environments for rainbow young people.
