$15 million redevelopment commences on Leschenault Leisure Centre

  • McGowan Government delivers election commitment for major upgrades to Leschenault Leisure Centre
  • Planning and design for the $15 million redevelopment has now commenced
  • Upgrades to the facility will triple the seating capacity and include up to four additional courts
  • A $15 million upgrade to the Leschenault Leisure Centre (LLC) is now under way thanks to the McGowan Government delivering on its election commitment to keep the Peel region strong.

The major upgrades to the facility will include the construction of up to four new indoor courts, spectator seating, a retractable grandstand and a mezzanine level with a viewing platform for events.

Supporting infrastructure such as wheelchair and pram access to all courts, a universal access toilet, crèche, café, sports shop and amenities for storage and training is also part of the project.

The planning and detailed design stage is expected to be completed by May 2022.

The project will be jointly funded by the McGowan Government through the Department of Local Government, Sport and Cultural Industries ($3 million) and the Shire of Harvey ($6 million).

Additional funding and other partnership opportunities will be investigated for the remaining cost.

The LLC is a leading South-West sporting facility and the project will allow the centre to provide crucial sporting facilities for one of Western Australia's fastest growing communities.

As stated by Sport and Recreation Minister David Templeman:

"Keeping local and regional communities healthy, strong and connected is a key priority for the McGowan Government.

"This investment will benefit the Harvey community and the greater South-West region, by allowing the centre to expand its sports programs and attract country and regional competitions.

"This is an exciting project that focuses on the principles of universal design to provide a sporting and recreation space that is welcoming and all-inclusive."

Comments to be attributed to Murray-Wellington MLA Robyn Clarke:

"I am so proud to hear that the McGowan Government has contributed $3 million towards this project.

"The Leschanault Leisure centre is a vital facility and this upgrade will benefit local sporting clubs, residents and the wider community."
