35th Universal Periodic Review UK statement on Spain

Palais

The Universal Periodic Review takes place in Geneva.

The United Kingdom welcomes Spain's strong commitment to promoting and protecting human rights.

We welcome the Government's positive steps to address women's rights and to tackle gender-based violence.

We understand the increased strain on Spain's asylum system, but are concerned about resource provision and coordination for genuine asylum seekers.

We recommend that Spain:

  1. Develop and implement a National Action Plan adequately addressing all forms of Human Trafficking, as outlined in the 2018 report on The Group of Experts on Action against Trafficking in Human Beings.

  2. Adopt an open, merit-based process when selecting national candidates for UN Treaty Body elections;

  3. Ensure asylum claims are processed as quickly as possible, and that administrations work together, to ensure asylum seekers/refugees have sufficient access to social protection and services.
