$40 Million Water Supply Upgrades Flow Across Perth

  • Replacement local water mains and connection pipes will improve water supply service to customers
  • Second tranche of two-year program covers Bayswater, Cambridge, Joondalup, Stirling, Subiaco and Wanneroo local government areas
  • Part of wider $756.3 million investment in the Perth metro water supply and network

Thousands more households across Perth will benefit from improved water supply reliability under the second tranche of a $40.4 million [1] program to upgrade water pipes.

Around 23 kilometres of water reticulation main will be replaced in short stages of 6-8 weeks' duration. Carefully planned to minimise disruption, construction work will be mostly within verges along residential roads with minor traffic management in place.

The second tranche covers priority sections within the City of Wanneroo, City of Stirling, City of Joondalup, Town of Cambridge, City of Subiaco and City of Bayswater.

Water reticulation mains are the smaller water supply pipes found along almost every street that are in turn connected to individual properties via a connection pipe.

Supporting around 300 jobs during delivery, three WA-based contractors - Saltire Infrastructure, Hascon Civil and Benang - have been delivering the renewals works, with the program expected to be completed by mid-2026.

While every water supply network in the world experiences leaks and bursts, detecting them is often more challenging in Perth due to the sandy soil, meaning it can take time before water is visible at the surface.

To help overcome this, as part of Water Corporation's ongoing monitoring program, cutting-edge fibre-optic technology is providing early detection of leaks in the Perth CBD by listening for their distinctive sound.

The water reticulation renewals project is part of Water Corporation's $756.3 million investment in the Perth metro water supply and network this current financial year (FY24-25), including some related to the future Alkimos Seawater Desalination Plant.

As stated by Water Minister Don Punch:

"Investing in the local water supply network is vital to help prevent leaks and bursts and save valuable water.

"These staged upgrades, across six local government areas, have been thoughtfully designed to minimise the effect on residents with smaller sections and quicker timeframes.

"This $40 million program is part of the Cook Government's long-term investment to deliver a reliable and climate-resilient water network for Perth into the future."
