Registrations have hit an all-time high for the 2018 edition of the 7 Rocky River Run. Now just under a week away, the annual Rockhampton charity event is expected to draw over 2,000 participants, collectively, for the family-friendly 2km walk/run and 5km, 10km, and half marathon courses.
Participants of all fitness levels are encouraged to come out to experience a fantastic day along the Fitzroy River. Whether aiming for the finish line; challenging a personal best; looking for a healthy activity with the entire family; or competing as either an individual or as part of a team, the one-day event offers something for everyone.
Last year’s edition was also of particular significance in the wake of Cyclone Debbie and massive flooding to the area. The 2018 event will continue the tradition of getting Rockhampton’s residents involved, engaged and active. It will also continue to help bolster the community, attract tourists to the region and its local businesses, and benefit important causes.
Beginning in 2008 by the Rotary Club of Rockhampton, the 7 Rocky River Run has evolved into both a major fundraising event and awareness booster regarding two significant issues for central Queensland: youth mental health and suicide.
Since its inception, the event has contributed over $280,000 to community-based organisations and charity partners. Race proceeds directly benefit R U OK?, a suicide prevention charity encouraging live-saving conversations, and Ronald McDonald House, an organisation assisting the families of seriously ill children. As an additional incentive for participants to have a meaningful run, individuals have the opportunity to raise money for their own charities of choice via the Everyday Hero portal.
The top three finishers in the 5km, 10km and half marathon courses are eligible to receive a cash prize. All race finishers receive a completion medal, while the first 2,000 people to sign up receive a complimentary 7 Rocky River Run t-shirt. A total of 1,500 reusable water bottles, provided by Hastings Deering, will also be distributed.
